KPFA Looks like I’ll be on the air tonight on my very favorite radio station, KPFA 94.1FM to promote the upcoming SoVoSo holiday show at Yoshi’s. Tune in to Transitions On Traditions with Greg Bridges for his introspective mix of “jazz, blues, spoken word, & then some” at 8PM. I’ll be on with Zoe Ellis around 8:30 or so.  Thanks for listening!

KKUP Radio If you’re in the south bay this Tuesday (12/5/2006) at 5:30 PM, tune into 91.5 FM when KKUP has a live on-air interview with me and Zoe Ellis from SoVoSo to talk about our upcoming Yoshi’s performance. Afrikahn Jahmal Dayvs, the resident Jazzhead, will host. As great as this community radio station is, they are not broadcasting on the net, sorry.

Opensource & free software that’s actually good! December 2, 2006

ThinkAll PublishingSomtimes there’s some software apps out there that really are free, and really are good! Think All is putting together bundles of unbelievably useful software and “selling” it for the $2.95 UPS shipping cost to get you the discs.

I’ve been a fan of OpenOffice 2.0 Office Suite for a while, it’s a replacement for Microsoft Office that I much prefer. Of course Firefox has been my browser of choice for over a year now, and Think All’s CD of it comes with Calendar too. Audacity Music Editing Studio is about as straightforward and simply useful audio editor you will ever find. I just ordered Gimp 2 Photo & Image Studio and some other nifty computer library items: 4500 Greatest Photos and 700 Greatest Fonts.

One of the best things about almost all these FREE softwares is that they work on both Mac and PC. So even though I’m mid-switch and expect to be working with both platforms (and Ubuntu) for the forseeable future, it’s the same software on either side. It’s a good time to check out this, and Think All’s other software offerings, as they look like they are just in a promotional period and may start charging sometime.

Sleep Research Center Then read these 40 amazing sleep facts from Austrailia’s National Sleep Research Center.

Here’s a sampling:

Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.

To drop off we must cool off; body temperature and the brain’s sleep-wake cycle are closely linked. That’s why hot summer nights can cause a restless sleep. The blood flow mechanism that transfers core body heat to the skin works best between 18 and 30 degrees. But later in life, the comfort zone shrinks to between 23 and 25 degrees – one reason why older people have more sleep disorders.

Diaries from the pre-electric-light-globe Victorian era show adults slept nine to 10 hours a night with periods of rest changing with the seasons in line with sunrise and sunsets.

I admit it, I have made some really bad hosting choices in the past. Then one day I wised up and went with HostMonster. I haven’t looked back!

Apple IIgs The first computer I ever had was an Apple IIgs. Technically, this was before there even were Macs (they were still just Apples). One day something about it broke and I ended up in PC-land, where things were cheaper. I took a class on building your own computers, and spent the next 5 years with computer parts around my room and 2-4 computers in various states of disrepair. Then I got a job at a music production company and had a chance to work with Macs again. A year or two later I found myself working at a mortgage company (where I still work now), as you can guess they don’t do Mac.

Mac Book Pro Now, for the very first time in my life, I’m buying the top of the line model of something. Seriously, I have never paid for the best of anything. I buy things used, I buy things new but 2 or 3 steps down from the best…but not this time. There’s a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 17″ 2.33GHz 2GB 160GB coming in the mail with my name on it!

Look for plenty more postings in the near future about how this is going for me. I’ll be making plenty of well-researched and personally-tested recommendations as usual. Feel free to learn from my mistakes and benefit from my often overly-enthusiastic research.

People always ask me if I know someone who can design, improve, finish, or otherwise help with their website. I have finally arrived at the point of just admitting that I do.

Check out my quickie page at SnapSynapse.com. I assure you that your site will look much better than this. Unfortunately, all my best work lies behind the corporate firewall of my employer, GreenPoint Mortgage.

Buy Tickets Online!

This promises to be an awesome show! Special guests include Rhiannon, Faye Carroll, Destani Wolfe, Joey Blake, Dave Ellis, and more. Last year I did this show as a last-minute, not-so-featured guest. This time, I’m part of the core group on every number with a featured solo on Bobby McFerrin’s “Sweet in the Morning”. Come for either show and I guarantee you’ll have a blast!
